# Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium

- The frequencies of genotypes at a locus resulting from random mating at that locus; for two alleles,
*A*_{1}and*A*_{2}, with respective frequencies in a population of*p*and*q*, the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium frequencies are*p*^{2}*A*_{1}*A*_{1}; 2*pq**A*_{1}*A*_{2};*q*^{2}*A*_{2}*A*_{2}. Departure from these frequencies is an indication that random mating is not occurring.
