DNA ligase

An enzyme that catalyses a reaction to link two separate DNA molecules via the formation of a phosphodiester bond between the 3'-hydroxyl end of one and the 5'-phosphate of the other. Its natural role lies in DNA repair and replication. An essential tool in recombinant DNA technology, as it enables the incorporation of foreign DNA into vectors.
